To reduce the risk of vial spread between patients, staff and the wider community, we have been advised not to see patients face to face for treatment. The problem we have is that in order to repair a tooth or remove a filling, to access decay, we have to use a high speed handpiece. The handpiece has to be cooled so it doesn't overheat the tooth. The water spray creates a aerosol which can combine with the covid virus (if the patient is infected) which can then be inhaled or enter the body via the eye. This could infect dental staff or the next patient in the surgery. As we do not know who is infected, nor do we have access to the highest standard PPE we have been advised it is too risky to carry out emergency care which might result in aerosol formation.
